A Visit to the Beautiful Home of Ram Dass
This is a story I have longed to share for so long, because of how incredibly special it was to me!
In the heart of lush Maui, nestled amidst verdant foliage and whispers of ancient wisdom, lies a sanctuary unlike any other that I have ever traveled to—the cherished home of the beloved spiritual teacher and pioneer, Ram Dass.
Embarking on a pilgrimage to this sacred space, I found myself completely enveloped in an aura of serenity and undeniable love. I felt safe, warm and held.
As I stepped onto the grounds, in his home and his temple... a palpable sense of peace washed over me, as if the very air resonated with the echoes of countless souls who had sought solace and enlightenment within these walls. The fragrance of incense spilled out of his temple and lingered in the air, creating an aroma that soothed my soul and remided me of my travels to far away lands and temples. Tears began to fall... and it felt like I was...home.
Guided by the gentle whispers of the breeze, I wandered through lush gardens adorned with beautiful blooms and photos of the Guru. I playfully danced my way through the heart shaped labyrinth next to the temple.
Amidst the tranquility of nature, I found myself drawn to the heart of the sanctuary—a sacred space where Ram Dass's presence seemed to linger, imbuing every stone and flower with his timeless wisdom and boundless love.
Entering his cozy home, I was greeted by the warmth of local friends chanting Hari Krishna, and a big, beautiful warm embrace from Dassi, who simply smiled and said, "welcome home!" The soft glow of tapestries adorned with sacred symbols and intricate mandalas made his home feel so warm, inviting and somehow profoundly grounding. Every corner revealed treasures of spiritual significance—faded but beautiful altars poised in devotion, a worn copy of "Be Here Now," , and relics from distant lands, each holding a story of awakening and transformation.
This place broke me wide open from the inside out, from top to bottom and somehow challenged all of my limiting beliefs with love and compassion.
As I sat in quiet contemplation, surrounded by the essence of his teachings, I felt a profound sense of interconnectedness with all of creation—a recognition of the inherent divinity that resides within each and every being. In this sacred space, time seemed to stand still, and I was reminded of the eternal nature of the soul and the infinite potential that lies dormant within each of us.
I was given the opportunity to spend time in his private office/study space as well, and the immense feelings that washed over me were intense and seemed to demand a hush over me. I felt him so strongly there. The table where his body laid for 4 days after his passing was there, completely covered and adorned with Hawaiian flowers.
Later, the group of friends and family that was there gathered in the kitchen to share a lovely Indian meal. We had rice, curry chicken and traditionally made Chai. Somehow this food felt like it brought my soul home through a long lost memory.
Leaving Ram Dass's sanctuary, I carried with me a sense of inner peace and clarity—a reminder that true fulfillment is found not in the pursuit of anything external, but in the journey towards self-realization and spiritual awakening. The mystery had somehow worked its magic on my soul, leaving me to contemplate love and life, far greater than I had before. Saying goodbye to this place was like saying goodbye to a cherished loved one- it was hard.
In all the pilgrimages I've taken, all the travels around the world that I've endured, nothing has compared to the way I felt at Ram Dass's home! And what I love most, is that this memory is something I can carry with me for ever.
My visit to Ram Dass's home on Maui was more than just a physical journey—it was a soulful pilgrimage, a sacred communion with the eternal essence of being, and a reminder of the transformative power of love, wisdom, and true profound presence!
I will continue to keep my heart open to more experiences like this one! You never know what kind of magic will find you- when you're open to it!
Sending you all so much love!
With Grace,
Kimberly
